South African Airways and SunExpress Sign Damp Lease Agreement

Johannesburg (Thursday, 12th October 2023)South African Airways (SAA) and SunExpress, have entered into a damp lease agreement that will allow SAA to operate a schedule utilising two SunExpress aircraft for a six-month period, commencing mid-October 2023. The first of the 2 aircraft was received yesterday.

Sun Express, is a joint venture between Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines. Sun Express boasts among the youngest fleets in Europe and was named Europe’s Best Leisure Airline in 2023 at the World Airline Awards and in 2022 was awarded World’s Best Leisure Airline in the same awards.

SAA has entered a “damp lease” agreement with Sun Express, the lease covers the provision of aircraft, maintenance, and cockpit crew, whilst the aircraft will be served by SAA’s cabin crew to maintain SAA’s customer service standards. For maintenance of these aircraft, SunExpress has contracted SAA Technical (SAAT) to perform any required work, at its cost, on these aircraft whilst they are operated by SAA.

Under the agreement, two Boeing 737-800 aircraft from Sun Express fleet will operate flights from Johannesburg on behalf of SAA during the airline’s high demand period. The first aircraft will start operations in mid-October and a second aircraft will be added depending on the capacity demand by SAA.

According to John Lamola, Chief Executive of SAA “This unique ACMI is a short-term tactical intervention in SAA’s fleet strategy, as we are working on the deployment of our long-term dry-leased four A320s. We are pleased with our relationship with SunExpress and are excited with its potential as we both manage the seasonality of passenger traffic in our respective geographic markets.”

Tebogo Tsimane, Chief Commercial Officer expressed appreciation at the way SAA’s loyal customer base has adapted to this temporal experimentation with SAA’s brand since the airline has started utilizing ACMI fleet acquisition strategy this year.

First Lady of Zimbabwe recognised by UNWTO

The First Lady of Zimbabwe, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, was recognised by UNWTO Secretary General Zurub Pololikashvili for “championing gastronomy tourism” in the country and region at the eighth UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism in San Sebastián, Spain, over the weekend.

Mnangagwe took University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor, Professor Paul Mapfumo, and students from three other universities in the country with her to experience and learn about gastronomy.

“We will push gastronomy tourism to greater heights through agriculture, empowerment of rural communities and in collaboration with the university’s Innovation and Industrial Hubs for Standardization and Certification of all the raw materials,” Zimbabwe Tourism said in a press release.

At the forum, Pololikashvili said: “Gastronomy tourism can play a leading role in promoting responsible agricultural practices, protecting biodiversity and reducing the environmental footprint. It can also create new opportunities for communities to thrive, protect their heritage and traditions, and become an engine of growth and diversification for destinations supporting our roadmap towards sustainable development goals.”

FlySafair Launches Maiden Flight To Harare

0

South African low-cost airline, FlySafair has launched its maiden flight to Harare as it expands its operations in southern Africa.

A FlySafair plane touchdown down at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport for its maiden flight from Johannesburg to Harare on Monday morning. It will be flying daily the Johannesburg-Harare route.

NewsDay reported that the airline will also be adding Livingstone, Victoria Falls and Maputo to its route network.

Speaking at the launch of FlySafair’s inaugural flights to Harare, Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona said:

This airline will be offering travellers its signature low-cost model on regional routes.

Let me highlight the positive impact of low-cost airlines on the aviation industry.

Instead of competing with traditional carriers, low-cost carriers help grow the market by attracting non-fliers and tapping into new customer segments.

This approach is popular in the United States and Europe, I’m told they will allow travellers to book a seat on the daily Harare route for prices starting at only US$53 and a seat on the three times weekly Victoria Falls route from US$74.

Tourism Minister Barbara Rwodzi said the decision by FlySafair to launch flights to Harare and Victoria Falls shows they have confidence in Zimbabwe as a desirable tourist destination.

She said Zimbabwe is targeting to create a US$1 billion tourism industry, and the coming in of FlySafair brings the country closer to achieving that objective.

Airports Company of Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd (ACZ) board chairperson Tich Muhonde said:

A budget airline ushering in a fresh era of connectivity; I am both thrilled and assured that this economical service will drive an increase in the number of passengers travelling between Zimbabwe and South Africa.
The fares are comparable to bus prices, with the distinct advantage of the flight time being a mere two to two-and-a-half hours as opposed to a full day on a bus.

FlySafair has been a prominent provider of specialised aviation services in Africa since 1965.

Luxurious superyacht experience launches in Cape Town

0

Hazendal Wine Estate, managed by Newmark Hotels & Reserves, has launched a luxurious superyacht experience in Cape Town, complementing the Stellenbosch-based wine estate’s growing offering of five-star experiences.

The Hazendal Yacht, Princess Eve, at 25m, is South Africa’s largest superyacht and is now available for exclusive use charter cruises and private events in the waters around Cape Town. This is the country’s most upmarket boating experience.

The luxury vessel has extensive outdoor deck areas, a rooftop Jacuzzi, and an indoor lounge. The yacht can accommodate up to eight people on overnight cruises and bigger parties on day trips.

Three spacious cabins are configured with double, queen and bunk beds. The master cabin features a king-size bed and large windows that offer 180-degree views of the Atlantic Ocean. All four cabins have en-suite bathrooms with showers while the master cabin has its own bathtub.

When chartering the yacht, passengers can choose from a variety of Western Cape itineraries. These include excursions up the West Coast to Langebaan and Saldanha Bay, sunset cruises around Robben Island, trips along the Atlantic Seaboard to Clifton or Hout Bay, and cruises around the Cape Peninsula, passing Simon’s Town and the scenic Cape Point Nature Reserve.

The vessel can also be booked for private functions. These can be held in the harbour waters or at the yacht’s permanent docking station at the V&A Waterfront, opposite The Victoria & Alfred Hotel.

Gastronomic experiences onboard

Some of the fine dining options that guests can enjoy on board include ribeye steaks, grilled line fish, gorgonzola gnocchi, crème brulée, and panna cotta.

For a more casual dining experience the yacht offers barbecues on the roof deck. Here guests can expect to sample Cajun prawns, lamb cutlets and beef fillets. A canapé menu is also available for outdoor events.

An onboard mixologist prepares a wide array of drinks at the bar, including the yacht’s signature ‘Endless Summer cocktail’. The full range of award-winning Hazendal wines are available on board, including the estate’s MCC Blanc de Blanc and Blanc de Noir Cap Classique.

“The Hazendal Yacht, Princess Eve, both complements and completes our offering of Western Cape experiences. This new experience allows our guests to pair the peaceful beauty of the Cape Winelands with the vibrancy of Cape Town, as experienced from the waters of the Atlantic Ocean,” said Simone Voloshin, Director of Hazendal Wine Estate.

“World class wines, fine dining, unsurpassed luxury, and bucket list experiences all form part of the five-star luxury Hazendal Experience. Yacht passengers can be assured of expecting the same standards of excellence and refined hospitality that they have come to expect when visiting our estate,” added Voloshin.

Newmark’s first cruising product

Princess Eve is the first cruising product to form part of the Newmark Hotels & Reserves portfolio.

Both Hazendal Wine Estate and The Hazendal Hotel, which opens its doors next month, form part of the hospitality management company’s South African portfolio.

“With its azure blue waters, iconic Table Mountain views and white sand beaches, Cape Town has firmly established itself as a sought-after cruising destination since the launch of the city’s cruising terminal. However, despite more than 190 000 big ship cruise passengers docking at Cape Town harbour this year, the region remains largely unexplored as a superyacht destination. We look forward to tapping into this new market with the sublime Hazendal Yacht. This product will showcase Cape Town as one of the most attractive superyacht destinations in the world,” said CEO of Newmark Hotels & Reserves, Neil Markovitz.

Introducing the World’s first electric dhow launched at Zambian lodge

0

Green Safaris, which operates eight camps in Zambia and one in Malawi, recently launched the world’s first electric dhow at the Tongabezi Lodge, just upstream of Victoria Falls.

The eDhow, whether it is the first in the world or not, is a marvel of modern technology that runs completely silently on the Zambezi River. Powered by a 10Kw electric motor, the eDhow provides an experience unlike any other, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the stunning natural surroundings without the noise and emissions typical of traditional fuel-engine boats. Whilst sneaking up on dozy crocodiles might not sound appealing, it is rather unforgettable to do so from the safety of the boat.

Offered as a ‘silent safari’, the eDhow allows guests to cruise the Zambezi River without an engine’s loud and intrusive sound. In addition to cutting noise pollution, the eDhow reduces carbon emissions, which is important for sustainable tourism in the ecologically sensitive area.

The eDhow is very efficient and generally uses around 10% to 15% of its capacity during a three-hour cruise for six to eight passengers, meaning it could undertake six trips before recharging.

In addition to energy efficiency, the vessel is safe and reliable, and needs much less maintenance than standard petrol engines. It also has sufficient capacity to power its way out of strong currents if necessary.

The eDhow is a joint concept between Dutch boat builder Koos van den Steuijt and the carpentry team at Tongabezi.

The design was inspired by traditional dhows used in Malawi (its sister lodge Kaya Mawa is based on Likoma Island on Lake Malawi) and is made from mukwa, a durable indigenous hardwood.
