New airline and direct route to Europe for South Africa

0

Air Belgium has touched down in South Africa for the first time – and with the launch of its new air service between Brussels, Johannesburg and Cape Town, the airline offers travellers direct access to the heart of Europe.

Flights aboard the airline’s modern A330neo will depart Brussels every Wednesday and Sunday at 19h45 – arriving in Johannesburg at 7h15 the next day, with a continuation to Cape Town.

South Africans heading to Europe will be able to fly from Cape Town International (with a short stop in Johannesburg) or OR Tambo every Monday and Thursday. The flight offers 30 seats in Business Class, 21 seats in Premium Class and 235 Economy Class seats.

“It is an exciting and important chapter for Air Belgium,” said CEO Niky Terzakis. “But we’re equally thrilled to introduce South Africans to a new airline and an alternative route – and thereby direct access to the heart of Europe.”

“We often talk about ‘Belgitude’, and our motto is ‘Fly Belgian Class’, which is all about bringing joy back to international travel,” said Terzakis.

“And while our travellers value our fun and engaging approach to travel, we also deliver what really matters: a safe, seamless journey; transparent billing (no hidden fees); and a generous luggage allowance.

“What’s more, is that we offer travellers an environmentally-friendly travel option as the Airbus A330neo consumes on average 25% less fuel compared to previous generation aircraft. Lower fuel consumption also means less CO2 emitted into the atmosphere.

The new aircraft offers reduced noise level, mod-lighting, and state-of-the art inflight entertainment with WiFi and internet connection throughout the flight.

Fares start at R11,569 for an all-in return ticket between Johannesburg and Brussels, and passengers are allowed a 30kg baggage allowance for free.

The twice-weekly flights are good news for business travellers as Belgium is currently South Africa’s sixth largest trading partner as well as the Western Cape’s seventh largest European export market. – BusinessTech

CDC downgrades Kenya to COVID ‘low’ risk

0

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) downgraded Kenya from Level 2: Moderate Risk to Level 1: Low Risk on September 12.

To be listed Level 1: Low Risk, a destination must have had 49 or fewer new cases per 100 000 residents over the past 28 days.

The West African nation of Togo also moved down to Level 1.

Regardless of the risk classification levels, the CDC still recommends that travellers are up to date with their vaccines before travelling internationally.

Air Recovery Continues

Iata’s passenger data for July shows that the recovery in air travel continues strongly. “And that is even with capacity constraints in parts of the world that were unprepared for the speed at which people returned to travel,” said Willie Walsh, Iata DG.

African airlines saw an 84.8% rise in July RPKs versus a year ago. July 2022 capacity was up 46.7% and load factors climbed 15.5 percentage points to 75.0%, still, however, the lowest among regions.

Total air traffic in July 2022 (measured in RPKs) was up 58.8% compared with July 2021. Globally, traffic is now at 74.6% of pre-crisis levels.

Domestic traffic for July 2022 was up 4.1% compared with the same period a year ago and is now driving the recovery. Total July 2022 domestic traffic was at 86.9% of the July 2019 level.

International traffic rose 150.6% versus July 2021. July 2022 international RPKs reached 67.9% of July 2019 levels. All markets reported strong growth, led by Asia-Pacific.

“There is still more ground to recover, but this is an excellent sign,” said Walsh. “Aviation continues to recover as people take advantage of their restored freedom to travel. The pandemic showed that aviation is not a luxury but a necessity in our globalised and interconnected world.”

Air Tanzania opens Harare route

Air Tanzania has introduced the Dar es Salaam-Harare-Lusaka route while the Ethiopian Airlines is set to begin a third service to Zimbabwe, this time to Victoria Falls and Bulawayo, with the Botswana destination being a direct flight instead of going via Victoria Falls.

These developments comes after ever more airlines have also begin introducing their flights in the country during the past few months.

Air Tanzania introduced its new service using a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner this week before returning to Dar es Salaam via Lusaka on Tuesday.

“Air Tanzania recently operated the Dar es Salaam-Harare-Lusaka route using their flagship Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The route is usually operated using a Airbus A220-300,” reads the statement.

Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed that it will launch a new service to Bulawayo, and will begin direct flights to Gaborone.

“Ethiopian Airlines plans to add it’s third Zimbabwean destination when it’s adds flights to Bulawayo on 30 October. Flights will be operated four times weekly using a Boeing 737-800 which will be upgraded to the newer Max 8 on the 1st of December.

“The route will be operated as a triangular route from Addis Ababa-Victoria Falls-Bulawayo-Addis Ababa,” the airline said.

Also starting from October 30, flights to Gaborone will be operated five times weekly direct from Addis Ababa instead of the previous triangular route which operated four times weekly via Victoria Falls (Addis Ababa-Victoria Falls-Gaborone-Addis Ababa).

Last month, Airlink, Southern Africa’s premier airline, introduced daily direct return flights between Johannesburg and Victoria Falls as it seeks to reconnect the region’s main economic hub, Johannesburg, with the iconic tourism destination.

This followed approvals by Zimbabwe’s and South Africa’s aeronautical authorities for the extension of Airlink’s already comprehensive services between the two markets to include the route between Johannesburg and Victoria Falls.

Airlink’s flights are operating daily using a modern 98-seat Embraer E-190 jetliner and are scheduled to conveniently connect with its other services to and from its Johannesburg main base as well as to long-haul flights provided by Airlink’s growing number of global partner airlines.

Posting on its tweeter handle, the Airports Company of Zimbabwe confirmed the developments.

“Victoria Falls International Airport welcomes again Fly Airlink on its daily flights between Johannesburg and Victoria Falls using the Embraer ERJ 190. Travel industry was most hit by the COVID-19 pandemic but Airports Company of Zimbabwe is happy with the Zimbabwe Aviation recovery rate,” said the company.

Recently, Airlink chief executive and managing director, Mr Rodger Foster, said the route will be launched starting this month.

“Victoria Falls is a jewel in the region’s tourism crown and Airlink is looking forward to re-establishing connectivity between the attraction and Johannesburg. This brand new Airlink route will be our second to Victoria Falls, which we already serve from Cape Town. In addition, we provide direct flights connecting Harare with Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban and between Bulawayo and Johannesburg. With the recent introduction of long-haul flights from Europe directly to Victoria Falls, our services allow customers arriving on those flights to conveniently include South African destinations in their travel plans,” he said.

In addition, Airlink provides direct flights connecting Harare with Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban and between Bulawayo and Johannesburg.

“Airlink, Southern Africa’s premier airline, will launch daily direct return flights between Johannesburg and Victoria Falls from 15 August 2022 reconnecting the region’s main economic hub with the iconic tourism destination.

Improving access into Victoria Falls is one of the areas of focus by the Zimbabwean Government and tourism industry in line with the Tourism Growth and Recovery Strategy.

This is envisaged to increase arrivals and connect the destination to every part of the world, making Victoria Falls a world tourism hub.

Zim permits: Concern over ‘negative consequences’

0

Hospitality association, FEDHASA, has welcomed the announcement by Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi extending the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP) for a further six months to June 30, 2023.

The South African Government had decided not to renew the permits when they expired in December 2021 but, initially agreed to an extension of December 2022 to grant ZEP holders a chance to apply for alternative visas.

“FEDHASA empathises greatly with the serious impact the cancellation of the permits may have had on some businesses; particularly the logistical considerations and humanitarian implications for staff members who have been an integral part of the team for many years,” said Rosemary Anderson, FEDHASA National Chair.

“Thousands of legal Zimbabwean Permit Holders have been living and working in South Africa for many years. Many now have South African children and families.

“Requiring of ZEPs to leave South Africa would not only have negative consequences for the hospitality and tourism industry, but would cause trauma and pain to people whose only sin was to legally look for a better life for themselves and their families,” she added.

South Africa’s unemployment problem will not be resolved by forcibly removing a few hundred thousand Zimbabwean legal permit holders who had built their lives in this country. Rather, South Africa should set its sights on expanding its economy and creating more jobs for the millions of South Africans that are unemployed, which the tourism and hospitality industry could play a key role in if there was a concerted government effort to prioritise removing the red tape that hamstrings the industry.

“For tourism and hospitality to deliver on its economic promise, we require an approach where all Government departments, business, and labour join forces to remove unnecessary red tape, provide a tourism-friendly environment and elevate our destination status to the level it should be. Inbound International tourism and hospitality could be the key to making a massive dent in our unemployment problems in SA.

“We could create significant numbers of jobs in hospitality and tourism in areas where other industries do not operate if we simply committed to collaborating meaningfully to facilitate the changes that are needed for tourism to flourish,” Anderson concluded. -Tourism Update

Hospitality group, Africa Albida Tourism (AAT) has resumed construction of the Victoria Falls Safari Spa following a two-year delay due to the uncertainties around the impact of COVID-19 on travel and tourism.

Expected to open in October, the spa is being built under canvas and is located on a north-facing ridge in the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge estate. The central area will feature manicure and pedicure stations, private relaxation rooms, a café, a hair salon and change rooms, including one that is wheelchair-friendly, as well as three separate private treatment rooms (one double and two singles).

AAT Chief Executive, Ross Kennedy, said: “For two years we have had to look at the foundations that we started in March 2020 and to now see the contractors back on site and the project becoming a reality once more is a testament to the tourism recovery we are witnessing and contributing to.”

Kennedy said the spa would be open to non-residents and residents of the group’s properties. AAT’s portfolio includes Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, Victoria Falls Safari Club, Victoria Falls Safari Suites and Lokuthula Lodges.
